One Week Left to Get a Room at the Convention Rate
May 31 is the last day you can get a room at our special convention rate at The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake. Here’s the procedure:
- Call 1-800-801-9982.
- Give check in & check out dates. (The official convention days are July 16, 17 and 18. Most will be checking in therefore on Sunday, July 15 and departing Wednesday, July 18.)
- Tell the reservation line that you are with a group (National Amateur Press Association) and give them the group ID: 4GD4PT.
- Give them your credit card number.
- At this time the credit card will be charged for the first night’s stay plus tax.
- Wait for a confirmation number.

PRESS RELEASE
National Amateur Press Association to Hold
143rd Convention at Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio
The National Amateur Press Association announces that its 143rd annual convention will be held July 16-18, 2018, at The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio.
In conjunction with the convention the Association will present exhibits on hand-set letterpress printing and on desktop publishing of amateur journals at the Ashtabula County District Library in Ashtabula on Monday evening, July 16, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.; and on Tuesday afternoon at the Geneva Public Library from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
The National Amateur Press Association is the world’s longest-running amateur journalism organization, in continuous operation since its founding in Philadelphia on July 4, 1876.
The Association encourages and supports the publication and distribution of amateur journals by providing a monthly centralized mailing service for any amateur journals submitted by publishing members that month. It also has a Manuscript Bureau to help non-publishing writer-members who seek to have their material published by any interested publishing members. In addition the Association also publishes a quarterly official organ, The National Amateur.
At its closing banquet the President, Michelle Klosterman, will announce the winners of the Laureate competition for calendar 2017. There are eight categories: Poetry, Fiction, Miscellaneous Prose, Editorial Comment, Art, History of Amateur Journalism, Letterpress Printing, Printing (other than letterpress), and Editing.
Membership currently numbers 85, mostly from the United States, but also Canada, the United Kingdom, and Austria. A dozen libraries in the United States and one in Australia receive materials from the Association, as does the Library of Amateur Journalism, located at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, which supports it with a foundation.

To Plan Your Check In and Check Out Dates, Here’s a Recap of Our Convention Schedule
- Sun., July 15 – Arrival day for most of those attending. An informal supper gathering is planned for those who wish to join in. Evening: hospitality room open.
- Mon., July 16 – Opening Session, probably around 9 a.m.; recess for lunch. Optional Lunch together. Afternoon: letterpress printing and amateur journalism demonstrations and displays at Ashtabula County District Library, Ashtabula (see following article). Afternoon and evening: committee meetings as necessary; visiting the area; socializing. Hospitality room open. Optional supper together.
- Tue., July 17 – Second Session, around 9 a.m.; recess for lunch. Optional lunch together. Afternoon: letterpress printing and amateur journalism demonstrations and displays at the Geneva branch of the Ashtabula County District Library. Committee meetings as necessary; visiting the area; socializing. Hospitality room open before and after the banquet. Evening: Convention photograph and closing banquet. Laureate awards for 2017 announced and presented. Hospitality room open after the banquet.
- Wed., July 18 – Brief closing business meeting; unfinished business if necessary. Check out for most of those attending.
- Wed. through Fri., July 18 – 20 – option of extending your stay at convention room rates for those who wish to visit and explore more of the area.
Two Letterpress and Amateur Journalism Demonstrations Planned at Local Libraries
The Ashtabula County District Library main library, in Ashtabula, was excited to take up Arie Koelewyn’s offer of setting up a letterpress printing demonstration for the public on one of the days we’re in the area. And I will add to it with a live demonstration of composing and printing an amateur journal with a laptop computer and an inkjet printer. Maybe even a color laser if I can load it into the car. There will also be displays of amateur journals.

Contract Signed. We Are ON for July 16-18,
at The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio.

15 Rooms Blocked Out for Us (Until May 31)
With the signing of a contract, The Lodge is now preparing to hold our requested 15-room block. Once the block is in place and The Lodge gives us directions about how to register, we will pass that information along promptly.
The availability of rooms at $169 a night did not occur, however. Before we got the signed contract back to The Lodge all those rooms had been booked! Is this place popular?! So our rooms will be the Deluxe Double rooms, at $179 a night plus taxes, which will bring the total to $216 a night.
If the cost of a room is excessive for any of our members, I would mention that rooms may be shared by two people at no extra charge and only $10 a night extra for third or fourth adults. Children under 16 stay at no charge. There is a campground in the park with 93 RV and tent sites plus 12 cedar cabin sites. Also, in Geneva-on-the-Lake there are a number of inns and small motels that you could check out online. (Most seem to be seasonal and some require week-long rentals, but it may be worth checking.) Five miles south is the town of Geneva, where some walk-up second-floor loft rooms are offered, and at Exit 218 on I-90 there is a Motel 6, which is 6½ miles south of The Lodge.

Arie says his approach to the letterpress demonstration will be along these lines: “Take a small, tabletop press, some ink, paper and some type and you can create magic, or so it seems to those uninitiated to the black art. I have an approximately 100 year old Golding Official #2 press that is fairly easy to carry around. Its 6″x4″ chase is just about perfect to create a bookmark or small card and the press is easy enough to operate that even a child can operate it. Throw in a typecase, composing stick, and a few cuts for decorative flair and you (or in this case I) can talk, illustrate and demonstrate for hours about the joys of letterpress and its history. People can print their own bookmarks, or at least the final color. I usually pre-print much of content, leaving only a key element for the demonstration.”
Subsequently the library asked if we could also repeat the demonstrations on another day at their branch library in Geneva, and we have agreed.
Any of our publishing members are encouraged to bring a display of their journals, or poster boards, etc., about their amateur journal, that we could add to these demonstrations.
A Formal Auction Is Not Planned This Year
Although we won’t have a convention auction this year, members who have ajayrelated items they would like to dispose of, either by sale or by gift, are welcome to bring them and we will provide space in our meeting room to display them.

NAPA Convention Set for July 16–18, 2018, at The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio

Our 2018 Convention will be held Mon., Tue. and Wed., July 16–18 at Ohio’s newest state park lodge, located in 698-acre Geneva State Park. The park has 2 miles of shoreline frontage on Lake Erie. The Lodge and Conference Center overlooks the lake.
Reception Committee members Bill Boys and Arie Koelewyn, with their wives, canvassed an area of northeast Ohio in and around Ashtabula looking for a site for our 142nd convention site facility. With the help of input from a number of members in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, they recommended this beautiful and beautifully-located facility and the dates stated above.
President Michelle Klosterman has given her formal approval, so this is official information, and will be repeated in the March issue of The National Amateur, and in NAPA Email News.
The Lodge is located immediately to the west of Ohio’s oldest summer resort town, Geneva-on-the-Lake, and 9 miles west of Ashtabula. It is 6½ miles north of Exit 218 on I-90.
“Geneva State Park offers the visitor a natural beach, several areas of freshwater marsh and beautiful mature woodlots. The middle and western beach areas contain plants that are rare in Ohio but characteristic of the Atlantic coast. Sea rocket, seaside spurge, beach pea and silverweed can be found on the Geneva beaches. Marshes located at the mouth of Cowles Creek, No Name Creek and Wheeler Creek contain swamp smartweed, leafy sedge and submerged aquatic vegetation.” (From the park website.)
The town of Geneva-on-the-Lake website says: “During the summer season, our famous entertainment Strip is alive with arcades, amusement rides, restaurants, nightclubs, live music and more. Lake Erie offers fishing, boating, and swimming— often with just a short walk from your front door.
“Lodging includes camping, cottages, homes, and motels – and don’t forget our beautiful state lodge!
“You can shoot a round of golf at one of our in-town or area golf courses. For family fun, try one of our many miniature golf courses.
“We offer wineries and sunsets, too, along with just the right summer breeze. Arriving by boat? Dock within the safety of the harbor at nearby Geneva State Park.
