The Comfort Suites is conveniently located at the intersection of Interstate 77 and Route 14, just minutes away from downtown Parkersburg and the picturesque Ohio River. Many local attractions are easily accessed from the Comfort Suites. The most well known are: Blennerhassett Historical Park & Museum, Fenton Art Glass Gift Shop, Middleton Doll Factory and Gift Shop, West Virginia Motor Speedway, Smoot Theater, Parkersburg Cultural Center, Sternwheeler rides along the Ohio River, Grand Central Mall, plus lots of craft shops, historical sites and walking tours.

Writers and printers from all over the world will be convening at the annual gathering of National Amateur Press Association members. This will be the 134th year for this event and it will happen in Parkersburg, West Virginia. The group has never met before in West Virginia. If you are a writer or letter press printer you are invited to attend an Open House Session to see if you would like to become a member.
Members are getting a reduced rate at the Comfort Suites Hotel in Mineral Wells July 16, 17 and 18. The hotel is on Elizabeth Pike and offers a Courtesy Van and Airport Shuttle services. Nice rooms, meeting spaces and the cocktail lounge look very inviting. ALERT—Members need to call the actual phone number 1-304-489-9600 and not the free 800 number in order to get the $79.00/night special rate.
Business meetings are in the morning after which members can go on a number of field trips or relax in room or at poolside. There will be the usual auction which is always fun, posing for the group photo, a skit put on by a former NAPA member Austin Jones, visit and party in the Hospitality Suite and finish off the convention with the Banquet. If able to stay a little longer everyone’s invited to the picnic, next day, at a local park.

Writers in the group include many authors, editors and former editors as well as publishers, poets, professors, teachers, college students and small business owners. Printers include the same with amateur and professional letterpress craftsmen. Hot press (hand set and machine set), handwritten, typewritten, word processor, presses (letterpress and offset) home and office printers (inkjet and laser), photocopied, duplicator and commercially printed papers (journals) are all to be found in the association’s monthly “bundle.” Amateur Journalism (AJ) is alive and well and would like to extend this invitation to check out this fun hobby. Writers do all of this at their own expense and sometimes are rewarded with Laureates and other Certificates.

PARKERSBURG, W.VA., NAMED 2009 CONVENTION SITE
Pres. Jack Visser issued the following announcement today: “The 2009 NAPA Convention site has been moved from Denver to Parkersburg, West Virginia, the previously approved candidate for the 2010 convention.
“The dates earlier announced will be retained: Wednesday, July 15 (arrival & registration) to Sunday, July 19 (post-convention picnic).
“Details will follow shortly by way of this Email News, the March bundle, the forthcoming National Amateur, & the NAPA Web site.

DENVER WITHDRAWN AS CONVENTION SITE
Stan Oliner and Tom Parson have, with regrets, withdrawn Denver as the site of the 2009 convention, citing unacceptably high room rates. They write: “Hotels here will not budge from a $109 nightly fee plus 15% hospitality tax plus 8% tax. Banquet menu at $25 plus 20% plus 8% tax. Makes no sense in the current national economic climate. Attendance would be a disaster.”
Pres. Jack Visser, in consultation with the three Executive Judges (Troy McQueen, Leah Warner and Guy Miller), will weigh alternatives and announce their decision about a new convention site as soon as practicable.
